Like many poor Americans living on the frontier then, when times got bad the Smith family continued moving west in search of new opportunities. In 1816 they moved to Palmyra, New York. In 1818 they acquired some land in nearby Manchester. Members of the Smith family supplemented their farming efforts with a variety of odd jobs, including, according to some accounts, professional divination, scrying, and treasure hunting.
