By 1830, when the Book of Mormon was published, Joseph had begun to gather a following of believers who were attracted by his spiritual claims. Freshly printed Books of Mormon in hand, adherents proselytized the countryside, and began to win converts. Branches of the new church began to form in small towns like Fayette and Colesville.
