During the grueling ordeal of Zion's Camp, Joseph had bolstered the men's spirits by promising them that when they returned to Kirtland, they would receive a special gift or "endowment" from the Lord. After his return, Joseph began in earnest the construction of a temple where this endowment could be received. In 1836, the Kirtland Temple was finally completed and was dedicated in a rousing ceremony in which the Saints experienced a dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
