At first the Missourians of Clay County had felt sorry for the Saints after what had happened to them in Jackson County, and they welcomed them with open arms. But it was not long before many of the same factors that had alienated the Mormons in Jackson County began to cause strains in Clay County as well. Under the threat of violence, the Saints were finally persuaded to leave Clay County and move to Caldwell County to the northeast, where they established the Mormon settlement of Far West.
