Ireland was little known to the ancient Romans. The tribes inhabiting the Island, known to the Romans as "Scoti," occasionally launched harrying raids on the Roman province of Britannia. But beyond that, there was not signficant contact between the Irish and the rest of Europe until the arrival of Christian missionaries like St. Patrick in the 5th century.
