Nolumus moti esse, non movebimur Velut arbor sata propinqua aquae non movebimur last revised Jan. 24, 2004
ABLATIVE
Shows where a place is, or from where motion is directed. No prepositions are needed to show movement from cities, towns, or small islands. Eg. Roma from Rome.
Shows the cause of an action without using a preposition.
Use "a"/"ab" and the ablative case for agents in the passive voice. Instruments in the passive voice take the ablative case, but without a preposition.
Used to show when something happens. Eg. anno in/during a year; hora in/during an hour; sex annis in/during six years.
Used for comparisons; the second of two things being compared takes the ablative. Eg. Tuus longior est suo Yours is longer than his
Used to create a dependent clause using a noun and a participle ("ablative absolute" clause).
