Languages

When choosing languages for your character, in addition to the general information about languages in the Core Rules, you may want to take into account the following information about the five major languages in this campaign setting:

Waltian is the language spoken by Humans living in Nortonia, the Republic of Haldeve, New Waltia, and Eastonia. It is also spoken by most non-humans living in these lands and is for all intents and purposes the equivalent of "common."

Masovian is the language of Humans living in the Shushanish Empire, and is also spoken by many non-Humans living there.

Rouvanian is the language spoken by Elves. There are different dialects of Rouvanian spoken by different races of Elves (High Elves, Wood Elves, Drow, etc.)

Midonian is the language of Dwarves.

Karmarthian is the native tongue of all Goblinoids, but is also spoken by most non-Humans living in northern lands (exclusive of Elves). For example, Halflings may have their own language, but many also speak Karmarthian.

Shushanian is the native tongue of Fey, but is also spoken by most non-Humans living in the southern part of the continent and on the islands. For example, Treants and Gnomes speak their own languages, but most also speak Shushanian.

Sanctonian and Caputonian are languages spoken in the western empires of the Old World, and are so closely related to Masovian that a speaker of any one of the three need only acquire ½ a rank in that language skill to learn one of the other languages (i.e., Bards may learn both with the expenditure of 1 skill point; everyone else may learn 1 with 1 skill point).

Diluvian is spoken in the great eastern empire of the Old World.

Note regarding terminology: The term "Haldevia" is used to describe the entire continent and islands of the Western Hemisphere. The term "Haldeve" (and "Haldeven") refers to the Human Republic established in the east-central region of the continent. The term "Shushanian" is used to refer to the language and indigenous peoples of the southern portion of Haldevia. "Shushanish" refers to the Humans (and the Human empire) established in the former territories of the Shushanians. The term "Rouvanian" refers specifically to Elves, though early historical sources occasionally use it as a term to refer to all indigenous inhabitants of Haldevia.
