Trial of Faith
Summer 2007

This essay explores a "middle path between the polar extremes of, on the one hand, embracing the Church and rejecting the love I share with my partner and, on the other, rejecting the Church and embracing my sexuality." I look at the history of LDS responses to "same-sex attraction," I reflect on "eternal gender," celibacy, and debates over whether homosexuality is a sin, and on how the mission of the church relates to the inclusion of gay people in our communities. Through this reflection, I am seeking a way of responding to the conflict over homosexuality in our churches and in the broader society that "rejects judgmental postures while enhancing openness, love, compassion, hope and humility." This essay is published in the Summer 2007 issue of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
