The way of the angels is like watching the sunrise
It is so beautiful, you wish your whole life were contained in it
And then it is gone
The way of the angels is like riding a roller coaster
It is very fast and you can’t predict which way it will turn
The way of the angels is scary
It might kill you and They don’t care
The angels speak a strange language
Like the playing of violins
If you listen long enough you think you understand it
But then you realize you were way off
It’s like a riddle you think you can solve
But you never can, quite
The way of the angels is just around the corner
Always just out of sight
It is just through that doorway, over there
If you know when to open it
Because if you open it at the wrong time
It’s just a door
They can tell you pieces of their language
Each word is like a beautiful crystal you can hang around your neck
And look at and admire, and see so many things inside
They can teach you to walk in the way
Though what they tell you may be different
Than what you’re supposed to do
It’s the figuring out the difference
That unlocks the door
The world is full of good things and bad
Comfort and laughter, pain and sadness
And evil
Each person learns their way through the world
Avoiding the bad things and holding on to the good
But that’s the human way
The way of the angels is different
Most humans are like gophers
We like to stay in our holes in the ground
Where it is dark, warm and safe
Most of us like to look at the stars
framed by a doorway or a window
Not from high above the earth
Where the night sky could swallow us
Where the angels’ crossroads are
Learning to walk in the way of the angels
Is like moving to a foreign country and never going home
Some place really strange, like Timbuktu
You slowly forget that this used to be good
And that used to be bad
You get used to terrible things
But you can never again sleep the way you used to
When you think you have gone as far away as you can
Beyond the outer edge of reality
Beyond even the limitless domain of the imaginable
Into the illimitable domain of the unimaginable
You must go still farther
To where the mind breaks
Or where you are not you any more
You must do things you never would have dreamed
You must commit atrocities
And still understand that there is an order to things
Just an order you will never in a million years understand
You must disobey everything
Yet be totally obedient
Put on the angels’ eyes
See things are not what you thought
People not who you knew,
Space a different shape
Causality inexplicable, nightmares real
Know more than you ought to
But less than you need
